Medical Informatics –Bachelor and Master program
Since 1987, the Academic Medical Center runs a bachelor and master university program in Medical Informatics. The curriculum has been based from its outset within the University of Amsterdam- Faculty of Medicine. This organizational structure leaves ample opportunity for integration of the informatics-oriented components with the medical and health care-oriented components in the program. Medical informatics uses and evaluates methods and techniques that can be derived from as varied fields as informatics, medicine, psychology, clinical epidemiology and biostatistics. Overall, our program follows the IMIA recommendations with slightly more focus on medicine and health care organization. Student-centered approaches are heavily employed in the program, emphasizing students’ critical appraisal and a style of life-long learning. Full, associate and assistant professors of KIK perform over half of all teaching activities within this program.
International Master Class of Medical Informatics
This Master Class is organized yearly for selected students of the Medical Informatics programs of the AMC, the Ruprecht Karl University Heidelberg/Fachhochschule Heilbronn, the University for Medical Informatics and Technology in Innsbruck, Germany, the University of Minnesota, USA, and the University of Utah, USA. In a special environment (the inaugurating Master Class of 1999 took place in the monastery of Rolduc, Netherlands, founded 1104 A.D.) students will receive extra training sessions by distinguished professors in Medical Informatics. These Master Classes are organized in turn by each of the above mentioned universities that form the International Partnership in Health Informatics Education ( --> IPHIE).
The Amsterdam International Health Informatics Summer School
The Amsterdam International Health Informatics Summer School (AIHISS) is an event which is organized by the Academic Medical Center and University of Amsterdam(UvA). The AIHISS is predominantly aimed at advanced students (Medicine, Biology, Health Sciences) with knowledge of biomedical and clinical sciences, as well as recent graduates. This Summer School is a collaborative effort of AIHISS with IPHIE, International Partnership of Health Informatics Education. The Summer School course highlights the role of the doctor in controlling the impact of informatics on the health care sector. At the end of the course, students are able:
- to understand the scope of potential changes informatics tools may bring to the health care field
- to critically appraise the pros and cons of these tools in fundamentally changing daily working practices.
- to play a key role in optimizing the design of information systems for the health care sector
