Focus of research
The research group headed by Van der Poll has two major research topics: sepsis (and its major cause pneumonia) and tuberculosis. Both topics focus on the innate immune response, in particular pattern recognition receptors, and on the regulation of the procoagulant response. This research seeks to combine observational studies in patients with preclinical and fundamental studies in healthy volunteers and experimental animals.
Curriculum Vitae
Tom van der Poll (1961) received his MD degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam in 1986 and his PhD degree from the same University in 1991. In 1991 he was board certified in the Netherlands in Internal Medicine, and in 2000 in Infectious Diseases. From 1993 to 1995 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Cornell University Medical College in New York. From 1995 to 2000 he was a fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2003 he was appointed Professor of Medicine in the University of Amsterdam.
Since 2007 Van der Poll is head of the Center of Experimental and Molecular Medicine in the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. His research is embedded in the Center for Infection and Immunity Amsterdam (CINIMA). In addition, he is a staff member in the Department of Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine & AIDS, in the Academic Medical Center (University of Amsterdam), Amsterdam. He is a board member of the AMC Research Council and the AMC Graduate School for Medical Sciences. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Sepsis Forum.

Research programmes
Prof. dr. T. van der Poll - Innate immunity and coagulation in infectionThis program focuses on the host response to severe infection. Two main topics are studied: (1) the role of pattern recognition receptors and innate immunity in host defense, and (2) the influence of coagulation on host defense mechanisms. The most predominant research line studies bacterial sepsis and the most common causes of sepsis pneumonia and peritonitis. Another research line studies tuberculosis.
