Studying at the AMC-UvA
Each year, approximately 350 first-year students begin their study of medicine at the AMC. The study is characterised by a lot of small-scale, patient-oriented education and consists of two phases that more or less merge into one another. The first, four-year phase consists mainly of thematic teaching. Patient contacts are already frequent during this part of the study, for instance during the nursing assistance internship and junior internship. And in clinical line education the study material from the thematic teaching curriculum is elucidated by patient cases - either on paper or in person. The second, two-year phase consists of training - 'internships' - in- and outside of the AMC.
The AMC-UvA is the first faculty that has drastically adjusted its internship's curriculum to the demands of our present-day society - both in social and scientific respect. During the internships the intensity of supervision gradually decreases as the student's independent handling and responsibility increases. The focus at this stage clearly is on professional attitude training and communication with patients and colleagues. After all internships have been satisfactorily completed, the student becomes Doctor of Medicine (MD).
An international environment
The AMC is in every sense a 'big city' hospital. It has a First Aid Department that generally buzzes with activity. It is a place where migrants more and more make an appeal for care. People who speak a different language, who have a different culture. The AMC is an international hospital. And with its training programme, the faculty of medicine links up seamlessly with this international environment. Cultural diversity asks for specific skills. For this reason these skills form an integral part of the medical training.
The AMC-UvA strongly supports the internationalisation of its education programmes.
The medical training programme offers many possibilities for following part of the study of medicine abroad - a nursing assistance internship in Indonesia, for instance, scientific training in Boston, or an internship in a developing country or at the medical centre of Kansas University with which the AMC collaborates. Gaining experience abroad improves the medical student's professional development and positively affects the AMC-UvA.
Studying in an exchange programme
The AMC-UvA also accepts a limited number of students from international medical schools in an exchange programme. International students can be accepted for blocks and research electives. There are only limited places in elective clerkships. At the time of the elective students must have completed at least three years of their medical education at their own medical school. Priority is given to applications from one of our official partner institutions.
