Laboratory Safety

The main goal of this course is to provide the knowledge and understanding of occupational health, safety and environmental (OSHE) issues needed to work safely in a laboratory, without unnecessary risk to yourself or others.
Basic Laboratory Safety trains the participant in the AMC rules and procedures and in working safely with GMOs and with physical, chemical and biological agents. The participant also learns about the prevention of environmental pollution. (The basic principles of firefighting are taught in a separate BHV instruction video.)

Nine basic e-learning modules, including exercises and tests, and supplementary modules. All modules are available in Dutch and English. English modules are numbered as follows:

L21 Introduction to the course
L22 Organization
L24 Hazardous materials
L26 Physical risks
L28 Dirty little devils in the lab
L30 Biosafety and biosecurity in general
L32 Occupational health infection prevention policy for laboratories
L34 Radiation Safety

  • PhD candidates, students or interns who will work at an AMC laboratory for less than 12 weeks are exempt from following the e-learning modules of the Lab Safety course.
  • PhD candidates, students or interns who need independent access to biologically contained laboratories or the ARIA, are obliged to follow the applicable e-learning modules for those specific areas.
  • For these project members in the context of the RGMO there is a separate module Biosafety level 1 or 2 environment, without the risk assessment component.
