E-science: new information technologies for research with Big Data

Goal:
Information technology has become an essential ingredient of biomedical sciences. The aim of this course is to bring attention to new approaches that can be used for handling large-scale data in biomedical research, including processing, data management and collaboration. At the end of the course, the participant will (1) be familiar with new concepts and state-of-the-art, (2) understand how these new approaches relate to his/her own research, and (3) be able to apply some of these technologies and tools in practice

Format:
The course is composed of 5 sessions in one week, including presentations by lecturers, invited speakers and students; hands-on exercises; and group discussions.

Scheduled dates:
May 8 thru 12, 2017

Content:
1. Basic concepts, examples and state-of-the-art of research infrastructures and e-science;
2. Introduction to distributed computing (grids, clouds, clusters);
3. Data and Scientific workflow management (concepts and examples);
4. Hands-on experience with the AMC e-science platform;
5. Discussion about study cases from students;
5. Advanced topics (big data, science gateways, etc.)

Target audience:
AMC PhD candidates, who handle large amounts of data to carry out biomedical research. Participants are expected to have a general familiarity with computers.

Language:
The course is given in English.

Certificate:
To qualify for the certificate, a participant must attend all lectures and workshops. Attendance will be registered.

Study load:
20 hours, which is comparable to 0.6 ECTS points.

Number of participants:
Maximum 15 per course.

Costs:
No charge for registered AMC PhD candidates. Employees of the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV can participate provided slots are available. All other participants are charged a fee of 625 euro.
