Genetic Epidemiology

By the end of this course, participants are able to design studies to investigate the role of genetic differences in the development of illnesses, and then to analyze data statistically to quantify this role. They are able to perform these analyses using dedicated software packages, and to interpret the results effectively.

This course runs once a year and consists of five afternoon sessions on Tuesday and Thursdays (13.00 – 16.00 hrs), spread over a three week period. Each session begins with a lecture on theoretical aspects, followed by a practical computer session applying the methods discussed by analyzing real data.
The free statistical package R is used during the practical computer sessions. Participants are encouraged to acquaint themselves with R prior to the course.

The course is organized by members of the scientific staff of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics

Scheduled dates:
March 7, 9, 14, 16 and 21, 2017.

The following subjects are discussed:
- Basic principles of (molecular) genetics and genetic epidemiology study design;
- Familial aggregation. Is there a genetic basis to a disease, trait, or phenotype?
- Segregation analysis. What is the mode of inheritance of a phenotype? Heritability using twin and pedigree data.
- Linkage analysis. Is inheritance linked to one or more genetic markers? Pedigree data.
- (Genome wide) association analyses. Confirming results of linkage analysis, and fine-scale gene mapping by linkage disequilibrium. Data of unrelated individuals.
- Validation and meta-analyses of association studies.
- Sequencing and rare variants analyses.

Course material:
Handouts, data sets, an introduction to R and background articles will be distributed through Blackboard and at the meetings.

Target audience:
PhD candidates assumed to be familiar with the basic statistical concepts and methods covered in the Practical Biostatistics course and the concepts of hypothesis testing, the p value, confidence interval, odds ratio, relative risk, and linear and logistic regression analysis.

The course is given in English.

To qualify for the certificate, a participant must attend all lectures and complete all assignments satisfactorily. Attendance is registered.

Study load:
30 hours, which is comparable to 1.1 ECTS points.

Number of participants:
Maximum 25 per course.

No charge for registered AMC PhD candidates. Employees of the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV can participate provided slots are available. All other participants are charged a fee of 625 euro.
