Medical Literature: Searching for a Systematic Review

Go to application form.

Goal:

Searching for systematic reviews requires more complex and rigorous searching in order to minimize bias with an emphasis on high recall.

The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the systematic review search approach, and to impact the skills needed to build a good basic search strategy. The goal is not to become a proficient information seeker and the assistance of an information specialist during a systematic review process is still recommended (see content).

Format:
The course runs three times a year. The course takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Content:

  • Lecture 'searching for a systematic review': identification of databases and concepts to search, the use of methodological search filters, how to build complex searches using MeSH and textwords, and the documentation of your search.
  • Analysis of published search strategies (small group exercise)
  • Setting up a broad search in PubMed (computer workshop)
  • Short demo of a search in Embase using the Ovid interface to illustrate the difference with PubMed

Recommended follow up courses:

Embase-Medline via Ovid and/or PsycInfo via Ovid. Matches perfectly with the course Clinical Epidemiology 4: Systematic Reviews.
