Go to application form.

Goal:
This course provides skills and tools needed to write readable, relevant and credible research papers for publication in English. Uniquely, participants receive extensive individual feedback on their own papers.

- Finishing a scientific article for publication. In other words, the course is 'goal oriented': making the paper publishable.

Format:
The course runs eight times a year and consists of four three-hour sessions, plus four written assignments that receive individual feedback from the instructor and peer reviewers (other course participants). Attendance at all four sessions and completion of all writing assignments is compulsory.

November 3 and 10, December 1 and 15, 2017

expected May 11 and 18, June 8 and 22, 2018

Participation list for courses in 2017-2018 is open for enrollment.
You can subscribe for participation in a course year. Before the start of every edition of the Scientific Writing course, we will notify all the listed applicants by e-mail. You can then indicate whether you will actually participate in the that particular edition.

Content:
This is an intensive course and writing takes time; therefore, participants are advised to plan sufficient additional time for the writing part. Participants are required to write a more or less complete article for publication, being guided through the process in four assignments:

  1. The point of the research
  2. A 'skeleton' of the paper, clarifying the main messages of the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  3. Abstract and Title.
  4. Complete article, incorporating the corrections and suggestions made by the instructor and the peer reviewers. This will take time and, therefore, this assignment can be completed after the course ends.

Part of the work is peer reviewing: participants critically review and discuss each of the four assignments with a partner and peer review the work of other course participants. This implies that you must be willing to work closely with a fellow PhD candidate and meet deadlines for peer reviewing and the submission of assignments. After texts have been revised based on these reviews, they are sent to the instructor for editing, practical tips and suggested improvements.

Target audience:
AMC PhD candidates with research experience who have finalized much of the theoretical and technical aspects of their research and have at least some results.

Language:
The course is given in English. Papers are in English.

Certificate:
Attendance at all 4 sessions is compulsory and registered. Issuance of the certificate is also based on progress in the participant's writing, as demonstrated by performance in the assignments.

Study load:
42 hours, which is comparable to 1.5 ECTS points.

Number of participants:
Maximum 16 per course.

Costs:
No charge for registered AMC PhD candidates. Employees of the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV can participate provided slots are available. All other participants are charged a fee of 500 euro.
