Goal:
To get hands-on experience with the Unix/Linux operating system to facilitate biomedical researchers to get access to and use the large variety of data analysis tools that were developed for this environment.

Format:
The course is given on two consecutive days and consists of a mix of lectures and computer exercises.

Scheduled dates:
March 8 and 9, 2017

Content:
Unix is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system, for which many tools in bioinformatics and e-Science have been developed. Many computers or computerclusters that are used in the analysis for large (omics) dataset run Unix as opposed to Windows. Therefore, basis knowledge of Unix provides the biomedical researcher with the skills to access and use powerfull computer systems and tools that have been developed for Unix and are used on a routine basis in bioinformatics, biostatistics and e-Science.

Topics:
1. Introduction to Unix;
2. The basic commands;
3. Shell scripting;
4. awk, sed.

Target audience:
AMC PhD candidates.

Language:
The course is given in English.
