Respiratory Medicine (Pulmonology)

The Department of Respiratory Medicine covers the full spectrum of academic tasks in the area of respiratory health and disease:

  • Clinical Care
  • Research
  • Teaching

The mission of the Department is:

  • to prevent and combat lung diseases by highest standard of medical care
  • to develop and implement innovative diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • to produce integrative medical research with intensive cross-talk between clinical and basic researchers
  • to teach and educate undergraduate and post-graduate students in medicine and basic science towards MD and PhD degrees
  • to train medical specialists (pulmonologists)

The Department comprises:

  • clinical ward
  • outpatient clinic
  • bronchology/endoscopy centre
  • lung function laboratory
  • respiratory cell biology lab
  • clinical research unit


The Department has intensive collaborations with all other relevant medical and research units within AMC.

The clinical profile of the Department includes:

  • severe and difficult-to-treat asthma
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • lung cancer
  • interstitial lung disease, in particular sarcoidosis
  • obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)
  • cystic fibrosis
  • pulmonary vascular diseases
  • respiratory infections
