The Bioinformatics Laboratory: the computation perspective of biomedicine

The Bioinformatics Laboratory was initiated in 1997 to strengthen biomedical research in the Academic Medical Center (AMC, Amsterdam). The laboratory is part of the department of Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (CEBB) and is headed by Antoine van Kampen. The bioinformatics group members represent a broad range of bioinformatics, statistics, and (systems) biology expertise. They engage in research and support projects, and significantly contribute to various education and training programmes.

Mission: from bioinformatics to systems medicine

The Bioinformatics Laboratory aims to develop and apply novel computational methods to extract new biomedical knowledge from complex biomedical (omics) data through a combination of bioinformatics and systems medicine approaches.

Activities: from research and education to support

Our research focusses on Systems Medicine and Information Management. Systems Medicine projects aim to understand biological systems through the analyses of omics data (systems genomics) or through the mathematical modelling of these systems (systems biology). Information Management focusses on the analysis, integration and/or use of public biomedical databases to ensure efficient use of public data in biomedical research. The Bioinformatics Laboratory significantly contributes to various education and training programmes to train the next generation of (bio)informaticians, biologists, and medical doctors in the management, analysis, modelling, and interpretation of large and complex omics datasets. The Bioinformatics Laboratory is one of the AMC core research facilities that enable excellent research. We participate in projects of many (pre)clinical (AMC) groups providing advice on experimental design and performing data analysis. We have extensive experience with various omics technologies including next generation sequencing, microarrays, and metabolomics.

Embedding: from medicine to science

Antoine van Kampen is appointed part time at the Biosystems Data Analysis group (Prof. dr. Age Smilde) to strengthen the synergy between the Faculties of Medicine and Science of the University of Amsterdam. This resulted in several joint projects.
