Introduction of gastrointestinal diseases
Darmoperatie

Research in this theme covers fundamental, translational and clinical studies into the stomach, bowels and liver, and into the causes and the treatment of diseases affecting them.

Within each research theme, AMC Principal Investigators and their co-workers are collaborating in clusters or centers. In the case of Gastrointestinal Diseases, this is realized in the Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research.

Principal Investigators in the field of Gastrointestinal Diseases can be found under the heading of Who is Who in Research.

Introduction of metabolic disorders

We already know more than 400 congenital metabolic diseases, and there are frequent findings that other, already recognized conditions are caused by a disrupted metabolism. This research theme concentrates on both fundamental and clinical research into metabolic diseases and developmental disorders. The focus is on unravelling the underlying mechanisms that cause the conditions, the development of new therapies (e.g. enzyme suppletion, substrate deprivation, gene therapy) and the development of new diagnostic procedures, with a particular emphasis on early diagnosis. The principal participants are the Laboratory for Genetic Metabolic Diseases, the AMC Liver Center (renamed Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research), and the departments of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Paediatrics, Clinical Genetics, and Medical Biochemistry.

Within each research theme, AMC Principal Investigators and their co-workers are collaborating in clusters or centers. In the case of Metabolic Disorders, this is realized in the Amsterdam Center for Metabolism.

Principal Investigators in the field of Metabolic Disorders can be found under the heading of Who is Who in Research.

Amsterdam Gastroenterology and Metabolism

The AMC researchers on Gastroenterology and Metabolism collaborate with their VUmc colleagues within the research institute Amsterdam Gastroenterology and Metabolism. Amsterdam Gastroenterology and Metabolism is one of the eight AMC – VUmc research institutes. These institutes bring together opinion leading academic research in the field of Health & Life Sciences developed in the Amsterdam Region.
