Diseases of the brain come in all shapes and forms, ranging from the highly disabling and eventually fatal neuromuscular condition ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) to mild, treatable depression. AMC research in this field focuses on the causes, diagnosis and treatment of such conditions in patients of all ages. This is done with the help of imaging techniques (e.g. MRI, fMRI and PET scans), clinical epidemiology methods and neuropsychological research. The genetics and DNA diagnosis of neurological disorders is also an important research topic.
AMC participates in ONWAR (Onderzoekschool Neurowetenschappen Amsterdam Rotterdam), a joint venture of the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences, VUmc/VU, ErasmusMC and AMC/UvA for stimulating collaboration and improvement of the quality of research and education in the neurosciences.
More about Psychiatric Research can be found here.
Principal Investigators in the field of Neurological & Psychiatric Disorders can be found under the heading of Who is Who in Research.
The AMC researchers on neuroscience collaborate with their VUmc colleagues within the research institute Amsterdam Neuroscience. Amsterdam Neuroscience is one of the eight AMC – VUmc research institutes. These institutes bring together opinion leading academic research in the field of Health & Life Sciences developed in the Amsterdam Region.
