Focus of research:

Main research focus is on Tissue Spectroscopy, Spectroscopic Imaging, Fluorescence Diagnostics and PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) of tumours. We have a strong collaboration with the 'van 't Hoff institute for molecular sciences' and the Chinese Academy of sciences to work on clinical applications of upconversion nanoparticles. In addition, a new field of research, the use of optical techniques for forensic investigations, is being explored. The forensic research group has strong collaborations with the Netherlands Forensics Institute and Forensic investigators of regional police. Subjects are; aging of bruises to improve the diagnosis of child abuse, detection of minimal traces at the crime scene, Localization, analysis and aging of bloodstains.

Curriculum Vitae

In 1991, I started at the Laser Center as a trainee, which resulted my BSc title. From 1993, I studied physics at the Free University, from which I graduated (Msc) in 1996 after a traineeship at the Laser Center. Subsequently, I became a PhD student of a European Union project on Photodynamic detection of cervical and ovarian neoplasia. This work, performed at the AMC Laser Center and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, resulted in a PhD thesis, successfully defended in august 2001.
Currently, I am a staff member of the Department of Biomedical Engineering And Physics. From 2003 working on clinical applications of Optical Coherence Tomography , fluorescence diagnostics and photodynamic therapy. In 2006, a NWO/STW, Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VIDI) grant was scored on ‘Depth-resolved Optical Spectroscopic Imaging (DOSI) in tissue. The general goal of this research project is to develop optical spectroscopic (imaging) techniques for non invasive of diagnosis/analysis of tissue and other biological materials for various applications in the medical and the forensic field. Also in 2006 a KNAW grant was scored on Synthesis and spectroscopic studies of luminescence up-conversion nanoparticles doped with rare earth ions and their application in the diagnosis and therapy of cancer. This research line explores new directions in nanotechnology  for specific detection and treatment of tumours, bacteria and parasites. THe VIDI work marked the start of my forensic biophysics group, that performs research which is aimed at the implementation of innovative optical and other techniques in (medical) forensic investigations. The medical-forensic work is aiming to improve the determination of the age of inflicted bruises as part of the diagnosis of child abuse, our group now covers biophysics lines on the age determination of bloodstains, post-mortem time determination from body cooling, age determination of bone material and bloodstain pattern analysis. Also a more biochemical research line developed which covers subjects like fluorescence modelling for age determination of fingermarks and body fluids, new analysis methods for detection of biomarkers in body fluids and age determination of subdural hematoma. Also medical collaborative research on spectral imaging of burn wounds and glioma was initiated. All forensic research is carried out in strong collaboration with the NFI and the Dutch Police.

Aalders is also co-founder and co-director of the ‘Co van Ledden Hulsenbosch Center’, the Amsterdam Center for Forensic Science and Medicine, a collaboration of the AMC, Faculty of Science, and the Netherlands Forensic Institute, which formally started in 2013. The CLHC stimulates and coordinates forensic science projects within the participating institutes and research teams. By identifying common forensic themes, a significant synergy between medical, scientific and forensic research has been created, and we identify funding opportunities to initiate new PhD and master projects as part of a coherent forensic research program. The CLHC actively promotes forensic science in the Netherlands by building and maintaining an international network, organizing meetings for PhD students, and initiating forensic research outside the traditional criminal justice domain. Currently the CLHC coordinates over 30 PhD projects in more than 12 research institutes in various faculties at the UvA, HvA, TU Delft and VU university.

On november 1, 2012, I was appointed professor by special appointment in Forensic Biophysics. The chair has been designated on behalf of the 'Genootschap ter bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde'.
