Focus of research:
  • Translational studies into cardiac sodium channel (dys)function and inherited sodium channelopathies (including SCN5A mutations) associated with cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, incorporating clinical and genetic with functional and mechanistic studies in transgenic models and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived (iPSC) cardiomyocytes.
  • Basic studies aimed at unraveling mechanisms by which defective sodium channels mediate cardiac conduction slowing and arrhythmogenesis, the complexity of sodium channel function and regulation, and their diverse (non-electrogenic) roles in cardiac structure and function.
  • Translational studies into the pro-arrhythmic effects of enhanced late sodium current in inherited and acquired arrhythmic disease, and its potential as pharmacological target.
  • Translational research on sudden cardiac death aimed at identifying and validating the functional effects of novel genes and pathways modulating cardiac electrophysiology in general, and sodium channel function in particular.
  • Identification of novel genetic determinants and modifiers of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmia risk.
