Goal:

Aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of and experience with communication skills, and to help overcome individual communication challenges when interacting with patients in a clinical research setting.

    Format:

    The course will run twice a year and takes up one working day.

      Scheduled dates:

      • November 11, 2020.
      • April 14, 2021.

      Content:

      Most of the day will consist of hands-on communication exercises, mostly linked to participants' own research. Communication skills will be taught and theoretical background provided when necessary. In the morning we first deal with the informed consent process. We practice how to inform patients about a study in a balanced, understandable and complete way. Next, we discuss and practice how to deal with patients' various emotions during their participation in research.

      In the afternoon, we will discuss some personal communication challenges in the research setting, identified by the individual course participants. Subsequently, skills to tackle those situations will be practiced with a professional actor.

      Target Audience:

      AMC PhD candidates.

      Language:

      The course is taught in Dutch, since communication with patients will mostly be in Dutch.

      Certificate:

      A participation certificate is issued. Attendance is registered.

      Study load:

      8 hours, which is comparable to 0.3 ECTS points.

      Number of participants:

      Maximum 6 per course.

      Costs:

      No charge for registered AMC PhD candidates. Employees of the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV can participate provided slots are available. All other participants are charged a fee of 125 euro.
