Laboratory Safety (e-learning; AMC Leerportaal)

Goal:
The main goal of this course is to provide the knowledge and understanding of occupational health, safety and environmental (OSHE) issues needed to work safely in a laboratory, without unnecessary risk to yourself or others. Basic Laboratory Safety trains the participant in the AMC rules and procedures and in working safely with GMOs and with physical, chemical and biological agents. The participant also learns about the prevention of environmental pollution. (The basic principles of firefighting are taught in a separate BHV instruction video.)

Format:
Nine basic e-learning modules, including exercises and tests, and supplementary modules. All modules are available in Dutch and English. English modules are numbered as follows:

  • 21 Introduction to the course.
  • 22 Organization.
  • 24 Hazardous materials.
  • 26 Physical risks.
  • 28 Dirty little devils in the lab.
  • 30 Biosafety and biosecurity in general.
  • 32 Occupational health infection prevention policy for laboratories.
  • 34 Radiation Safety.
  • 36 Environmental aspects in the laboratory.
  • 30 Biosafety and biosecurity in general (for non-lab employees).
  • 32 Occupational health infectio prevention policy for laboratories.

Most modules must be finished with a test:

  • 23 Test Introduction and organisation

  • 27 Test Physical risks
  • 31 Test Biosafety and biosecurity in general
  • 33 Test Occupational health infection prevention policy for laboratories
  • 35 Test Radiation safety

Scheduled dates:
The e-learning course modules can be followed at any time, at the participant’s own convenience.

Target Audience:
The course is intended for all AMC employees including PhD candidates, students and interns, and all those who need such knowledge in the course of their work.

  • PhD candidates, students or interns who will work at an AMC laboratory for less than 12 weeks are exempt from following the e-learning modules of the Lab Safety course.
  • PhD candidates, students or interns who need independent access to biologically contained laboratories or the ARIA, are obliged to follow the applicable e-learning modules for those specific areas.
  • For these project members in the context of the RGMO there is a separate module Biosafety level 1 or 2 environment, without the risk assessment component.

Language:
All modules are available in Dutch and English.

Certificate:
Certificates are issued in AMC Leerportaal/Edumanager, after passing the tests. Certificates are valid for 4 years, after which period the modules must be repeated. Certification signifies the participant is demonstrably qualified and competent on the specific subject.

Study load:
8 hours, which is comparable to 0,3 ECTS points.

Costs:
No charge for participants, but only available for those with an AMC email account.
