Goal:

The main goal of this course is to familiarize participants with the evaluation of effects in observational study designs, based on contemporary epidemiological concepts. By the end of this course, participants will be able to provide the counterfactual definition of causality, to explain the nature of confounding, and to recognize and discuss potential solutions for it.

    Format:

    The course runs twice every year. It consists of four sessions in a week, with one morning session over four consecutive days.

        Content:

        Counterfactuals, directed acyclic graphs, stratification, propensity scores, inverse probability weighting, Mendelian randomization, instrumental variable analysis.

        Target Audience:

        PhD candidates are assumed to be familiar with basic epidemiology (up to the level in the medical curriculum), to know about epidemiological studies and effect measures, and be able to handle basic statistical concepts and techniques (estimates, confidence interval, hypothesis test, regression).

        Language:

        The course is given in English.

        Certificate:

        To qualify for the certificate, a participant must have attended all lectures and completed all assignments satisfactorily. Attendance is registered.

        Study load:

        16 hours, which is comparable to 0.6 ECTS points.

        Number of participants:

        Maximum 25 per course.

        Costs:

        No charge for registered AMC PhD candidates. Employees of the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV can participate provided slots are available. All other participants are charged a fee of 625 euro.
