Focus of research

The focus of my research activities is primarily the interactions between fatty acid metabolism and other pathophysiological mechanisms in recurrent major depressive disorder. In the DELTA study, we compare fatty acid metabolism between patients and controls, and investigate associations with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis functioning, one-carbon metabolism, and genetic polymorphisms. In the FASCINATED study, we additionally link fatty acid metbolism with brain imaging parameters by (f)MRI, and assess the predictive power of these interactions for prospective depressive recurrences. In the DELPHI study, we explore connections between fatty acid metabolism and the serotonin neurotransmitter system. Finally, in coorportation with Tilburg University, we analyze data of a randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of add-on fatty acid supplementation on biological parameters in patients with major depressive disorder and co-morbid diabetes.
