Overview of dialysis and kidney transplant epidemiology in Europe

Congratulations! Rianne Boenink successfully defended her PhD thesis on 5th of October in the Agnietenkapel in Amsterdam. Her thesis examines data from the European Renal Association Registry regarding end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients on kidney replacement therapy (KRT). It highlights that KRT incidence varies across Europe and shows that the life expectancy of patients on dialysis was 70%, and on kidney transplant recipients 40% shorter than the life expectancy of the general population. The second part of her thesis focuses on kidney transplantation, with an increase seen in both deceased and living donor transplant rates over the past decade. The results can guide strategies to enhance KRT patient outcomes for policymakers and healthcare professionals. Click here for more information.
