Focus of research

The Trauma Unit of the Department of Surgery performs research in the broad area of trauma surgery. This research is carried out in close cooperation with various internal and external departments and specialties involved in trauma care. The studies are published in national and international scientific journals and presented on national and international scientific meetings.

The main areas of our trauma research are:
1. Trauma room management
2. Imaging strategies and techniques in trauma care
3. Treatment of pelvic and extremity injuries & complications (e.g. distal radius fractures and calcaneus fractures)
4. Non-operative management / Interventional radiology in trauma
5. Trauma registry and outcome research

The Trauma Unit also partcipates in the following research fields:
1. Acute traumatic coagulopathy / Massive transfusion (International Trauma Research Network; www.intrn.org)
2. Post-traumatic stress disorder / Intimate partner violence (Dept. Psychiatry; www.amcpsychiatrie-angst.nl/onderzoek_ptss.htm)
3. Emergency care (Emergency Dept.)

Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr. J. Carel Goslings (1968) did his medical study and surgical training in the Academic Medical Center (AMC) and St. Lucas-Andreas Hospital in Amsterdam. In 2001 he joined the staff of the Trauma Unit dept. Surgery. The Trauma Unit is responsible for the evaluation and (initial) management of all the trauma patients presented to the Level-1 trauma center of the AMC.
Prof. Goslings did a PhD study on external fixation of distal radial fractures and a fellowship in trauma surgery in several trauma centers in the U.S.A. From 2001 - 2017 he was trauma director (TraumaNet AMC), head of the Trauma Unit and, next to clinical and educational duties, involved in the coordination of trauma research. He was also director of the trauma center.
Currently prof. Goslings works as a full time trauma surgeon at the OLVG Level-2 trauma center in Amsterdam and performs his research in collaboration with the AMC.
