Focus of research

The research focus in on bacterial infections and global health with a specific focus on antimicrobial drug resistance and zoonotic infections. Within the antimicrobial resistance program, research is targeted at zoonotic transmission of antimicrobial resistance of Gram-negative microorganisms, and the development and application of novel tools for antimicrobial resistance surveillance.

Research on zoonotic diseases includes Streptococcus suis infection, an important swine pathogen and the main cause of bacterial meningitis in adults in countries of  the Far East such as Vietnam and Thailand.

The overseas research is carried out in close collaboration with the following institutes:

- Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

- University of Illorin Teaching Hospital, in Illorin, Kwara State, Nigeria

- RS H. Adam Malik Medan-Faculty of Medicine USU; RS Hasan Sadikin Bandung-Faculty of Medicine UNPAD; and Litbankes Institute, Indonesia

Collaborating institutes in the Netherlands include the Central Veterinary Institute, Lelystad and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht, as well as the Departments of Medical Microbiology of Maastricht UMC and Erasmus MC.

Curriculum Vitae

Constance Schultsz has been awarded the NWO ASPASIA premium in 2014. She is an executive board member of the EU COMPARE and PIGSs consortia.

She was appointed Professor of Global Health in particular Emerging Infectious Diseases and Antibiotic resistance in 2016. She is deputy Head of the Department of Global Health of the AMC and Executive Board member of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development.
