Yvonne Pannekoek

Molecular microbiology of bacterial infections

As Principal Educator of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, Pannekoek is involved in all aspects of education in molecular medical microbiology, infectious diseases and epidemiology.

As such, she develops, implements and coordinates several courses on Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases as part of the bachelor curriculum “Epicurus” of the Medical School. In addition, she develops courses on Molecular Microbiology for Biomedical Sciences Bachelor students at the University of Amsterdam and a course for the PhD Graduate School of Amsterdam UMC. In addition, she developed a new curriculum for Honours Education at the Medical School.

Pannekoek’s vision is to create and promote a learning environment in which (bio)medical students are encouraged to solve major challenges through creative thinking based on scientific methods and research. She is convinced that Honours is an essential additional educational platform to develop talented students into the (medical) leaders of the future.

Yvonne Pannekoek (1963) studied Medical Biology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), The Netherlands. She performed her Ph.D. research on the molecular pathogenesis of Neisseria at the Dept. of Medical Microbiology of the UvA and at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Tübingen, Germany under supervision of Prof. J.P.M. van Putten.

After her PhD in 1993, she continued her career as postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Prof. P.M. Bavoil at the University of Rochester, NY, USA, where she started working on molecular pathogenesis of Chlamydia. In 2000, she was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, Laboratory for Experimental Bacteriology. In 2015, she was appointed as Principal Educator.

In addition to education, she works on the molecular pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis, Chlamydia and staphylococcal infections.
