Nephrology (research)

The mission of the department of Nephrology is to improve the renal and cardiovascular outcome of chronic kidney disease as well as the results of renal replacement therapy.

To achieve this, not only clinical studies, but also fundamental studies on pathofysiological processes are relevant. The research lines are focussed on renal physiology, dialysis and renal transplantation. The projects include studies in patients, in animals and in cell cultures.

Transplantation Immunology

This theme is embedded in the theme on Infection and Immunity (PI: Prof. Dr. R.J.M. ten Berge).
In patients who have received a renal transplant, studies are performed on the mechanism of action of immunosuppressive drug therapy. Treatment with immunosuppressive drugs may be complicated by viral infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and BK virus (BKV) infection. Study of the immune response to CMV and BKV infection in these immuno-compromised patients provides insights which are also applicable to patients who are immuno-compromised for other reasons than receiving a solid organ allograft. In short, our programme consists of the following research lines:Group Members:Dr. F.J. Renal Physiology

This theme focuses on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renovascular diseases.
The presence of volume overload, disturbances of electrolyte homeostasis as well as sympathetic nervous hyperactivitiy hallmarks chronic renal failure, as well as hypertension, and is recognized as an important pathophysiological factor in cardiovascular and renal outcome. In collaboration with the Hypertension Group of the Department of Vascular Medicine, both clinical and animals studies are performed. Our methodological arsenal comprises gold standard measurements of GFR, ERPF, extracellular volume, glycocalyx mass, as well as analysis of the central blood pressure and pulse wave contours, and renal sympathetic nerve denervation.
