Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Bradley R. Pieters was trained as radiation oncologist at the Catholic University Nijmegen (presently Radboud University). The training for radiation oncologist was finalized in 1995. During his training he did a 5 month fellowship on brachytherapy at the Daniel den Hoed Kliniek in Rotterdam and L'Institut Gustav-Roussy in Villejuif. He finalized his training and specialisation in brachytherapy at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. He is by now recognized as a leader in the field of brachytherapy and has several appointments in this field such as the Chair of GEC-ESTRO (Group Européen de Curiethérapie-European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology).
In 2006 he obtained his Master of Science in clinical epidemiology at the Institute for Research in Extramural Medicine of the Free University Medical Center of Amsterdam. After graduating for PhD he was registered as Post-doctoral Medical-Biological Research Epidemiologist at the National Committee for Medical-Biological Research Training in the Netherlands (SMBWO).

Professional experience and career

Dr. Bradley .R. Pieters is currently employed as a radiation oncologist at the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC (University of Amsterdam). His main activities involve brachytherapy in general and also the whole spectrum of urological and gynecological tumors. The focus of his research is on different aspects of brachytherapy. Previously employed at the Netherlands Cancer Institute he began with the first investigations related to brachytherapy for breast cancer. He is the first to introduce the concept of PTV (planning target volume) in brachytherapy in 2001. After moving to the AMC he continued research in the field of brachytherapy, which resulted in the PhD degree on the development of a technique for pulsed-dose rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer. Other clinical studies under his supervision as principal investigator are: PROBACH (randomized trial on brachytherapy boost for prostate cancer; national trial) and POWER (randomized trial on focal prostate brachytherapy; international trial). Both studies have the main focus in reducing treatment related toxicity. In the past 8 years he was involved in projects to optimize brachytherapy treatment plans, making the outcome faster, more accurate, and more robust by the design of new algorithms and machine learning in cooperation with the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (Center for Mathematics and Computer Science) This research will lead not only to better tumor control, but also to less toxicity because of better treatment plans designed. On top of these clinical advantages, new algorithms and machine learning will make treatment planning faster resulting in a more efficient work process. Other projects in which he is involved with concerns dose distribution uncertainties for cervical cancer, the impact of bowel motility on the radiotherapy dose to the bowels and late effects quantification for pediatric brachytherapy.
