Curriculum Vitae

Van Bennekom obtained his MD in 1989 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He worked one year in the education department of faculty of Medicine before starting a PhD-study in the rehabilitation department of the academic hospital of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Topic of the PhD-study was clinimetrics of an instrument to assess disabilities (‘The Rehabilitation Activities Profile’). After succesfull ending his PhD in 1995 he started his training in rehabilitation medicine in the Vrije Universiteit and rehabilitation centre Heliomare, Wijk aan Zee. From 1999 he started as a neurophysiatrist in Heliomare. He set up a brain injury department focusing on severe cognitive problems for inpatients and outpatients. Since 2009 he is head of the research and development department of Heliomare. Main focus of the department is applied scientific research in collaboration with academic centers. Two PhD-studies are finished and 6 are in progress. Four of these PhD studies focus on brain injury related topics (sleep apnea, participation, balance control, dual tasking).
Since august 2013 van Bennekom has been appointed professor by special appointment of Rehabilitation and Labour, with a focus on those with acquired brain injury, at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
