Victor Gerdes is internist at the department of vascular medicine and the laboratory for experimental vascular medicine of the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC, and the department of obesity surgery of the Spaarne Gasthuis. Between 2003 and 2018 he was internist at the Slotervaart Hospital / MC Slotervaart were he performed, besides his cinical work and teaching, several research projects. For this he built and funded together with his collaegues his own group of PhD candidates. The focus of his research is vascular medicine and diabetes, with in the last years more and more emphasis on the treatment of severe obesity. 

Studies on the effects of hormones and endocrine disorders on thrombosis and haemostasis were performed in collaboration prof DMP Brandjes (Slotervaart / AMC) as well as with the AMC (prof HR Buller, prof JCM Meijers, prof E Fliers), LUMC (prof FR Rosendaal, prof SC Cannegieter) and Varese (dr A Squizzato). For studies on diabetes (complications, ethnicity, effect of corticosteroids) he collaborated with the AMC (prof JBL Hoekstra, dr F Holleman) and Isala Zwolle (dr T Vriesendorp). Studies on the influence of infections on thrombosis and haemostasis were performed together with prof ECM van Gorp and prof DPM Brandjes and the AMC (prof HR Buller and prof JCM Meijers). Together with prof B Loos of ACTA he has performed several studies on the relationship between diabetes, periodontitis and other oral complications. From 2007 together with the surgeons he built a rapidly growing team for obesity surgery. Along with the clinical work studies on the effects of obesity surgery on thrombosis and bleeding, on psychological aspects, on gastrointestinal symptoms and symptomatic gallstone disease and on metabolic effects were designed and performed.

Two large projects were started at the Slotervaart and are at present continued at the Spaarne Gasthuis, were the obesity surgery team continues after closure of the MC Slotervaart, together with the AMC. The first is the Baria study: in this project 500 severe obese patients are followed before and at least 2 years after surgery. Collection of fecal microbiome, clinical data, metabolic characteristics, metabolites, psychological datais performed before and the years after surgery along with biopsies of liver, fat tissue, intestinal tissue and portal vein blood sample, in order to investigate how microbiome  and metabolites influence NAFLD and diabetes. Many additional studies will be performed using these unique data. This project is a collaboration of the AMC (prof M Nieuwdorp, prof AK Groen), Spaarne Gasthuis, University of Goteborg, University of Copenhagen and UMCG, supported by grants from NNF, SKWOSZ, Spaarne Gasthuis and UMCG. The second project is the Upgrade study, double blind placebo controled RCT on the effect of 6 months of ursodeocycholic acid on symptomatic gallstone disease after bariatric surgery. A total of 972 have been included at the MC Slotervaart, OLVG and MC Lelystad and are in follow-up until the beginning of 2021. The study is a collaboration between the Spaarne Gasthuis and the AMC and supported by grants form ZonMW, SKWOSZ and Zambon.
