L1. Benign lesions of the vocal folds

Voice and quality of life can be severely affected by benign lesions of the vocal folds. Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a disease that is characterized by recurrent growth of exophytic wart-like lesions throughout the respiratory tract. The disease is mainly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11. There is no curative treatment for RRP. We aim to develop an epithelial in vitro model in order to ultimately be able to explain the virus’ effect on mucosa of the patients as opposed to healthy individuals inoculated with the virus.

L2. Embryology and pathology of the trachea

Congenital and acquired lesions of the trachea induce life threatening sequelae. Little is
known about tracheal embryology. Together with the department of Anatomy we explore its embryological and fetal development. Co-morbidity of congenital tracheal anomalies and other congenital anomalies are being explored.

L3. Narrow Band Imaging

Narrow‐band imaging (NBI) enhances visualization of superficial mucosal vascular patterns, and it identifies intraepithelial papillary capillary loops (IPCLs), which are important determinants for the histopathological diagnosis. NBI is superior to conventional white light imaging (WLI), since it improves the detection rate of small superficial malignant lesions. Until recently, NBI in otorhinolaryngology has been directed to the larynx. The main interest is exploration of its beneficial use in otology and rhinology.
