Prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury

Helium inhalation has been shown to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in experimental settings. We explore the effect of helium inhalation and possible aplication in humans:

  • The molecular effects of helium on the myocardium as well as the possible protective effect on organ damage during surgery (hreat, kidneys) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
  • The safety and feasibility of helium inhalation in patients on the ICU after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • The effects of helium inhalation on coronary hemodynamics in patients undergoing heart catheterisation.
  • The use of helium inhalation as adjuvant treatment in patient undergoing PCI for myocardial infarction.

Remote ischemic conditioning is another experimental technique to prevent reperfusion injury, in which reperfusion injury in one organ is reduced by aplying a short series of ischemia and reperfusion to another organ.

  • The molecular effects of remote ischemic conditioning on myocardium in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
  • The use of remote ischemic conditiong for the reduction of post-operative atrial fibrillation following cardiac surgery.
