Current projects and research experience

2017- now       Project leader (Co-chair with Bart Geerts and Alexander Vlaar) of a research group into hemodynamics in the perioperative and ICU setting. Topics: outcome optimization, basic physiological techniques and advanced (non-invasive) pulse wave analysis, hypotension, fluids, implementation and development of machine learning algorithms.

We lead:

    • Nine PhD students (1 Technical medicine)
    • One post-doctoral fellow (Technical Medicine).
    • Several scientific internships (> 20) to Medical and Technical Medicine (M2 and M3) students.

2013- 2017      Several research projects regarding implementing and applying strategies to assess and optimise perioperative outcome in high-risk (surgical) patients. Supervisor: Prof. Markus W. Hollmann, Department of Anaesthesiology, Academic Medical Center Amsterdam.

  • Evaluating intraoperative changes in microcirculation in the neo-oesophagus and liver.
  • Fluid and pain management in patients after pancreatic and liver surgery.
  • Implementation of goal-directed hemodynamic therapy in high risk surgery patients.
  • Fluid and haemodynamic optimization strategies.
  • Innovative projects regarding novel haemodynamic monitoring devices and development of treatment and machine learning algorithms.

2005-2010       PhD project with thesis: “artificial airways and mechanical ventilation of critically ill patients” Promotor: Prof. Marcus J. Schultz. Department of Intensive Care Medicine, Academic Medical Center Amsterdam.
