Janneke Harting has a background in Health Sciences - especially Health Promotion and Education (1998). During her PhD study at the Department of Health Promotion at Maastricht University she evaluated part of the Hartslag Limburg project. Central to her thesis (2005) was the "health advisor" who counselled patients with a risk of cardiovascular disease on a healthy lifestyle.
As a postdoctoral researcher, she performed a retrospective multiple case study on Dutch community projects aiming at health promotion and disease prevention. This resulted in a publication entitled: "Community projects in the Netherlands: forever promising?" (in Dutch; 2007) and an international publication on the application of program theories (2011).
Her second postdoctoral project, at the department of Social Medicine AMC UvA, focused on the new role of a "health broker" as an additional investment to promote health in deprived neighbourhoods. In this collaborative study she worked closely together with municipal health policy officers and local health promotors in order to bridge the gap between research, policy and practice. The use of developmental evaluations in this respect was reported on in 2012.
Between 2007-2010 she parttime worked at the Scientific Insitute for Quality of Healtcare of Radboud University Nijmegen. There she supervised a PhD study on the implementation of clinical practice guidelines in physical therapy. In this study, Intervention Mapping served as a blueprint for analysing the implementation problem and for developing a program to optimize guideline adherence amongst physical therapists.
From September 2009 till December 2016 she was co-leader of the research line Health Promotion for Disadvantaged Populations at the department of Social Medicine AMC Uva. As such, she was for instance involved in the Local50 study. This national study included the evaluation of the ZonMw Gezonde Slagkracht program wich intended to stimulate the development and implementation of integrated health policies at the municipal level.
From 2017 onward, her own research program, also called Health Promotion for Disadvantaged Populations. Core studies include (A) the evaluation of an Integrated School-based Approach to improve the health of primary school children in Amsterdam Zuidoost, (B) the development, implementation and evaluation of tailored smoking cessation support for smokers in lower socioeconomic groups, (C) the evaluation of different participative working methods with the use of an innovative theoretical framework.
Her teaching activities are related to the above themes and are part of the Epicurus curriculum for medical students at AMC UvA. These activities include the supervision of bachelor and master students from other universities as well.
