Curriculum Vitae

Suzanne Geerlings was born in Amsterdam in 1965. During her medical studies in the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam (MD in 1993), she followed a summer course Clinical Epidemiology at the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2001 she obtained her Board Certifcation of Internal Medicine in Utrecht. In the same time she was president of the residents of the Dutch Internal Medicine Society.

She subspecialised in Infectious Diseases (registration 2004) and defended her PhD thesis in 2000 at the University of Utrecht on the topic “ Asymptomatic bacteriuria in women with diabetes mellitus” (co-promotor Dr. RP Stolk, Dr. W Gaastra, promotor: Prof. Dr. AIM Hoepelman). She received the SB ICAAC award in 2000 and the ONVZ Prevention Year award in 2002 for this research. She worked at the Vrije Universiteit Medical Center from 2001 till 2003. In May 2003 she returned to the AMC, became a staff member of the Division Infectious Diseases, and continued doing research in the field of urinary tract infections, besides teaching and patient care. She was copromotor of Ruby Meiland (June 2006, promotor Prof. AIM Hoepelman and Prof. RP Stolk) on the thesis: “Pathogenesis, diagnosis and consequences of bacteriuria in women with and without diabetes mellitus.” She was the main author of the first version and updated revisions of the Dutch Working Party on Antibiotic Policy- guideline ‘Antimicrobial treatment of complicated urinary tract infections’ and member of the working groups for the (inter)national guidelines and revisions: Urinary tract infections of the Dutch College of General Practitioners, the Netherlands Society for Urology, Society of Nursing homes physicians, European Association of Urologists and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. At this moment, she is projectleader of the different studies (see above) and member of the projectgroup in many other studies. Furthermore, she is director of the program for internal medicine residents since 2014 and chair of the advisory board of PREZIES (PREvalentie ZIEkenhuisinfecties door Surveillance, PREvalence Hospitalinfections through Surveillance). 

Since January 2014 she is head of the Internal Medicine trainnee and since 2015 professor in Internal medicine, in special Quality of care.

Suzanne.Geerlings is an infectious disease specialist and staff member in the AMC. The subject of her thesis (2000) was “Asymptomatic bacteriuria in women with diabetes mellitus, for which she received two awards. At the moment she is participating in many projects mainly concerning urinary tract infections, HIV and quality of care, leader of three projects granted by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development and the Aidsfonds and member of several working groups for the development of (inter)national guidelines for the treatment of urinary tract infections or HIV.
