Early origins of health & development

Citation. To decrease health disparities we need to know where they start to diverse

Goal or mission statement. I study early factors that impact child’s health in order to develop more effective prevention programs to decrease health disparities.

Research themes. She is the project leader of the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD)-study, a the long-term cohort study which examines the health of 8,000 children of different ethnic backgrounds, all born in Amsterdam. Currently, the children reach the age of 15-16 years.

The current research-focus of her group is on the origin of child’s health and development by studying the contribution of nutrition and lifestyle factors during pregnancy and early life, examining maternal diet composition, metabolic state and hormonal state in relation to neurodevelopment of the foetus – studying how early environment impacts on outcomes in later life.

Within her research, she contributes to the unravelling of the origins of socioeconomic and ethnic disparities in health.
