Cellular Imaging: Basic Microscopy (AMC PhD Program; OOA)

Information about the course Basic Microscopy.

Goal:

This course teaches the application of the full range of imaging possibilities within the core facility Cellular Imaging (fluorescence and electron microscopy and flow cytometry) at the AMC and collaborating facilities.

    Format:

    This course runs twice a year (April and October), on five consecutive days at three different locations (VUmc 2 days, NKI 1 day and AMC 2 days). The course consists of lectures, discussions and hands-on demonstrations.

    Scheduled dates:

    May 2021.

        Content:

        The individual research projects of the attending participants will be discussed in relation to the demonstrated techniques, allowing exchange of ideas with fellow participants and microscopy experts and operators. The course is a guide to implement cellular imaging in the participant’s own research project.

        The topics covered are;

        • basic principles of microscopy;
        • specimen preparation and staining methods;
        • quantitative analysis of microscopic images (e.g. Image J);
        • fluorescence and electron microscopy techniques (including live cell and confocal imaging).

        Target audience:

        AMC PhD candidates.

          Language:

          The course is given in English.

          Certificate:

          To qualify for the certificate, a participant must attend all lectures and hands-on exercises. Attendance will be registered.

          Study load:

          44 hours, which is comparable to 1.6 ECTS points.

          Course organizers:

          Eric Reits (AMC) and Jeroen Belien (VUmc).
