This course is an optional deep-dive linked to the course "Digital Health Implementation & Evaluation". In this course, you can further explore techniques for researching user experience (UX). In addition to online education, there are also lectures and an on-site workshop at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC.
UX (user experience) design is a crucial concept in the context of eHealth. Healthcare must remain human-centred. Digitalisation can only facilitate human-centred care if digital healthcare applications are usable in practice. “Usable” digital applications are effective, efficient, and easy to use. But how do you find out whether an app or other eHealth tool is truly usable? If users experience problems with a technology, what kind of research can you conduct to diagnose the underlying causes, and to prescribe the right "treatments (solutions)" in collaboration with developers?
Would you like to be able to better describe or address problems with technology in your daily practice? Would you like to research the usability of a new digital healthcare application for yourself, your department, or your patients? Or would you like to participate in the development or improvement of new eHealth tools? Then this course is for you.
Topics
In this course, you can further explore the techniques for researching user experience (UX). The study material is based, among other things, on practical examples, policy documents, and academic theories and scientific studies. Through a case study, you can gain hands-on experience in UX research by planning, conducting, and analysing it using the "think-aloud" method.
In this module, you will learn:
- How theoretical modules regarding the interaction between people and technology define concepts such as "UX" and "usability"
- What the implications of using these models are for research
- How to plan and conduct usability research using the "think-aloud" method
- How to analyse the data from a "think-aloud" study in order to draw conclusions about usability problems and possible solutions
Approach and Lecturers
This in-depth course differs from the regular HI modules because it is delivered not only online but in a blended format, with preparatory and in-depth self-study materials and assignments that you can study at your own pace, but also lectures and an on-site workshop at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC (2.5 days). You will meet other students, as well as PhD students from the UvA and the VU who conduct research in the field of eHealth and UX. You will also receive personal guidance and can try out UX techniques yourself in our unique, state-of-the-art Digital Health Test Studio.
The course material, literature, and exam are in English. The study load for this course includes 15 contact hours on location over the first two weeks, and on average approximately 7 hours of self-study per week over 6 study weeks. The module concludes with a physical exam (duration: 1 hour).
The course Evidence-based UX Design for Health Care is taught by lecturers from the Department of Medical Informatics at the AMC. They have many years of experience as healthcare professionals, as scientific researchers, and as lecturers in the field of eHealth and UX. The lecturers are involved in numerous UX studies in practice.
