Medical Microbiology & Infection prevention

The human body is full of micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. These can be very useful but also harmful. They also can play a role in various infectious diseases. Medical Microbiology focuses on the role of harmful (pathogenic) micro-organisms in the human body.

Infection Risk
The Department of Medical Microbiology has a wide scope. The department contains bacteriology, virology and parasitology. Hospital hygiene is also an important focus of the department. The hospitalhygiënist focus on the prevention and control of infection in the hospital, both patients and staff. They also monitor the risk of infection in the hospital.

The department employs about 300 people in various functions such as technicians (both for patients and for research), administrative staff, researchers, molecular biologists, doctors, microbiologist, physician assistants and PhD students.
