Curriculum Vitae

Dr. M. Kok first studied Medical Biology at the University of Amsterdam (1994-1995). In 1995 she started her study Medicine at the same university. After receiving her medical degree she started her first job as a resident Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Zaans Medical Centre (2002). She then worked at the Academical Medical Centre (2003-2005, 2006-2009) and The Spaarne Hospital in Hoofddorp (2005-2006 and 2009-2010). She did a fellowship perinatology at the Academic Medical Centre (Nov 2010 - Feb 2013).
During her residency Obstetrics & Gynaecology she performed reseach in the area of external cephalic version under supervision of prof. dr. J.A. van der Post and prof. dr. B.W. Mol. In november 2008 she obtained her PhD degree.

Dr. M. Kok is currently working as a gynaecologist perinatologist at the department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the AMC, furthermore she is involved in multiple research projects on external cephalic version and preterm birth. Since the defense of her thesis entitled "External Cephalic Version" in 2008 she has been active in setting up her own line of research: Evaluation and organization of care, in particular concerning the prevention of breech presentation and premature birth.
External cephalic version (ECV) is a manual maneuver to prevent breech presentation by turning a fetus from breech to cephalic position. She conducted several studies to improve the efficacy of ECV, to determine its complications and to improve the implementation.
Since 2012 she shifted her focus towards prevention of preterm birth. She received a ZonMw grant to evaluate the effectiveness of a cervical pessary to prevent preterm delivery in women who did not deliver after an episode of preterm birth. Furthermore she was involved in a large cohort study to evaluate the use of the fFN test in women with symptoms of preterm labour to obtain the best approach for individualised risk assessment. Recently a new research project on the effectiveness of tocolysis was funded by ZonMW for 1,4 m euro for the APOSTEL VIII study, an international multicenter RCT. A grant application written with her colleague Dr. M.A. Oudijk.
