Dr. M.A. Oudijk is a consultant obstetrician at the AMC interested in high risk pregnancy and premature labour.
His thesis dealt with diagnosis and treatment of fetal tachyarrhythmias, which was partly performed at Yale University, USA and the University of Goteborg, Sweden and was completed in 2003 at the University of Utrecht. His residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was performed at the Diakonessenhuis Utrecht, UMCU and Elisabeth Hospital Tilburg and completed in 2008. During his residency, he performed a research project on a novel treatment of perinatal asphyxia with allopurinol at Cambridge University. A fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine was performed at the AMC and UMCU and completed in 2010. From 2010-2015 he was a consultant obstetrician at the UMCU in Utrecht.
He is involved in the conductance of multicenter trials within the Dutch NVOG consortium (www.studies-obsgyn.nl) and a member of the project groups of the recently completed studies on prevention and/or treatment of preterm labour, the APOSTEL I, II and VI, PROTWIN, Triple P and ASB study. He is the principal investigator on two recently completed large national RCT’s on treatment of preterm labour, the APOSTEL III (RCT comparing the tocolytic drugs nifedipine and atosiban, ZonMW 836011005, NTR – 2947) and APOSTEL IV study (RCT comparing nifedipine and placebo in PPROM, NTR – 3363), the recently completed IPD meta-analysis on maintenance tocolysis comprising of six international RCT's and of the IPD meta-analysis on acute tocolysis with nifedipine and atosiban, both performed within the GoNET (Global Obstetrics Network, www.globalobstetricsnetwork.org). He is a project member of the currently running trials on prevention of preterm birth, the Quadruple P study and PC study. He is the principal investigator of the recently completed APRIL study, a multicenter RCT on the effect of low dose aspirin on recurrent spontaneous preterm birth, the results are expected in 2020. In addition to leading large trials, long term child outcome after these obstetric intervention trials is a topic of his interest. Currently long term outcome projects include Follow-Up studies after tocolytic exposure (the APOSTEL III FU study, ZonMw funded), progesterone exposure (AMPHIA FU study, AR&D funded) and aspirin exposure (AR&D funded).
Currently he is the principal investigator of the APOSTEL 8 study, an international multicenter RCT on the effectiveness of tocolysis, which was funded by ZonMW in the Large Trials program for 1,4 m Euro.
In addition, he is involved in translational research on preterm labour as part of the project group of the ZAHARA III (Identification of novel markers for premature delivery based on investigations in pregnant women with congenital heart defects, ZonMW 91210050 ) and as co-principal investigator of the PRELHUDE (Cardiac- and vascular disease as underlying cause of premature birth, ZonMW 91210050).
In addition to his research activities, dr. Oudijk is also active in management as the current chairman of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Maternal-Fetal-Medicine division of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In 2016/2017 he was chairman of the first research agenda of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for 2017-2020.
In 2020 he is president of the European Spontaneous Preterm Birth Congress (ESPBC), together with his colleague Prof.dr. E. Pajkrt, which will be organised in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
