Dr Bredenoord volgde zijn opleiding tot MDL-arts in het Antonius Ziekenhuis Nieuwegein, het Barts and the London Hospital in Londen en in het AMC Amsterdam. Hij is al meer dan 15 jaar actief op het gebied van neurogastroenterologie en goedaardige ziekten van de slokdarm zoals achalasie, refluxziekte en eosinofiele oesofagitis. In zijn proefschrift (2006) beschrijft hij nieuwe technieken om reflux en motiliteit te meten in de slokdarm. Er is inmiddels geen andere arts in Nederland die door zoveel patienten met benigne slokdarmziekten wordt bezocht. In zijn onderzoek probeert hij steeds een brug te leggen tussen kennis in het ziekenhuis en onderzoek in het laboratorium. Er wordt zowel pathofysiologisch, diagnostisch als therapeutisch onderzoek uitgevoerd door hem en zijn team. Hij is auteur van meer dan 200 artikelen, boeken, hoofdstukken en richtlijnen op dit gebied en organisator van meerdere wetenschappelijke en klinische cursussen in Europa, Azië en de VS. Dr Bredenoord is voorzitter van de Europese Eosinofiele Oesofagitis Netwerk EUREOS en voorzitter van de sectei Neurogastroenterologie van de NVGE en hij is de editor van het tijdschrift Neurogastroenterologie and Motility.
Dr Bredenoord was trained as a gastroenterologist in the Antonius Ziekenhuis Nieuwegein, the Barts and the London Hospital in Londen and the AMC Amsterdam. He is active for over 15 years in the field of neurogastroenterology and benign esophageal diseases such as achalasia, reflux disease and eosinophilic esophagitis. In his PhD thesis (2006) he described new techniques to measure reflux and motility patterns in the esophagus. His clinic now hosts the largest population of patients with benign esophageal diseases in the Netherlands. In his scientific research he tries to make a bridge between clinical knowledge and science. Both pathophysiological, diagnostic and therapeutic studies are being performed. He is author of over 200 articles, books, chapters and guidelines in his field and organisor of several scientific and clinical conferences in Europe, Asia and the USA. Dr Bredenoord is president of the European Society for Eosinophilic Esophagitis and chair of the Dutch Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society and editor of the journal Neurogastroenterologie and Motility.

The Esophagus Center of the AMC is the largest referral clinic for non-malignant esophageal disorders in the Netherlands. We combine a special clinical expertise with a large number of trials and studies focussed on finding underlying pathophysiology, assessment of new diagnostic techniques and improved treatments. Three diseases are central: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and achalasia. Collaborations with interventional endoscopists (Prof P Fockens), surgeons (Dr M Schijven en Dr M van Berge Henegouwen), pathologists (Dr C Ambarus), allergists (Dr I Terreehorst) pediatricians (Prof M Benninga and Dr M van Wijk) and basic scientists (Prof W de Jonge, Prof R van Ree and dr R van den Wijngaard) are essential for the great results of our group.
