Research programmes

Prof. PhD E.T.M. Laan (Biopsychosocial determinants of sexual health)

In our research group, we focus on the following lines of research:

i. Central and peripheral mechanisms associated with the activation of sexual response. We contribute to unraveling the interaction between psychological and physiological determinants of sexual response, using physiological and questionnaire measures, fMRI, and implicit tasks.
ii. Effects of physical factors (chronic disease; nerve damage; pelvic surgery, i.e. conventional vaginal surgery, mesh implants, genital plastic surgery such as labioplasty) and psychosexual factors on genital response and sexual functioning.
iii. Etiological and maintaining factors (bio-psycho-social) of the major sexual dysfunctions (arousal, desire, pain) and possible beneficial agents (neurotransmitters, hormones, including hormonal contraceptives).
