PhD Defense: evaluating care by measuring ICU efficiency

Wonderful news for Safira! She defended her PhD thesis on the 18th of April 🎉

Her thesis explores challenges healthcare organizations face in balancing patient care quality and resource efficiency, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs). It focuses on measuring ICU efficiency using length of stay as a proxy for resource use and evaluates organizational factors affecting efficiency. The research spans Dutch and Brazilian ICUs, with a special focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also analyzes long-term mortality rates for Dutch COVID-19 ICU patients and the effect of transfers on mortality as measures of timeliness and efficiency. Click here for more information.
