Focus of research

Mission Statement
We aim to perform translational research in the field of Reproduction and Development.

Goals & Ambition
It is our ambition to be at the international front of Reproductive Biology research. Although both clinical evaluation studies and fundamental research are carried out within the department, are focus lies in bringing scientific developments to clinical application. The integration of patient care and research within our department provides the proper framework for the realization of this goal and ambition. Within the lines of research in our department we have the following goals:

Spermatogenesis & Stem Cells (dr. Ans van Pelt): We aim to unravel the mechanism of spermatogonial stem cell renewal and differentiation and to determine which genetic aberrations can lead to spermatogenic failure. We aim to develop a clinical application of human SSCs as a way to preserve reproductive potential in young boys diagnosed with cancer. In addition, we are interested in studying the plasticity of spermatogonial stem cells and their ability to form pluripotent cells that are of potential use for Regenerative Medicine.

Preimplantation Embryology (dr. Sebastiaan Mastenbroek): We aim to understand the development of human preimplantation embryos focusing on chromosomal status and developmental competence and to determine the optimal in vitro conditions for preimplantation embryos by conducting laboratory oriented evaluation studies (RCTs). More precisely, we aim to understand the origin and fate of mosaic embryos, i.e. embryos that contain both euploid and aneuploid cells.

Genomic stability of reproductive cells (dr. Geert Hamer): We aim to understand the genomic stability of both male and female gametes as well as the early embryo. Genomic instability can lead to infertilty as well as to developmental disorders and congenital malformations.

Pregnancy disorders (dr. Gijs Afink): We aim to understand the patho-physiology of preeclampsia and premature labour using mouse models and clinical samples.
